Selected Short Stories collects some of the best works of Cecilia Manguerra Brainard. Set in fictional Manila and Mexico, Intramuros and Acapulco, Ubec and Cebu, Brainard masterfully weaves the past and the present?covering the Spanish and American rule in the country, the Marcos era, and the country?s tumultuous experience with decades-long dictatorship and democracy. Written in a poetic style rich in imagery, Brainard?s well-crafted stories deal with loss and longing, loneliness and courage, heartbreaks, and the tragic fabric of human life.

Publisher: "Cecilia Manguerra Brainard grew up in the port city of Cebu, Philippines, a place that retains its Spanish colonial influences, inspiring Cecilia to create her mythical setting called ?Ubec?, which echoes the Santo Ni?o Church, triangular Spanish Fort San Pedro, and old buildings and streets of the real Cebu. Her three novels? When the Rainbow Goddess Wept, Magdalena, and The Newspaper Widow, are set (even partially) in Ubec. Cecilia is the author and editor of sixteen other books including Fundamentals of Creative Writing, Fiction by Filipinos in America, Contemporary Fiction by Filipinos in America, Growing Up Filipino: Stories for Young Adults, and the follow-up books Growing Up Filipino II and III. Cecilia has received a California Arts Council Fellowship in Fiction, a Brody Arts Fund Award, and a Special Recognition Award for her work dealing with Asian American youths. In 2001, she received a Filipinas Magazine Award for Arts. Her books have won the Gourmand Award and the Gintong Aklat Award. In 2023, she won the National Artist Cirilo F. Bautista Prize for Best Book of Short Fiction in English in the 40th National Book Awards for her book Selected Short Stories."
