The JNME is divided into two volumes collated based on the genres of the works that are ordered chronologically, retaining the obra number that Nakpil himself catalogued while giving obra numbers to works that have not been provided one. Volume I of the edition presents his works for piano, voice, and chamber ensembles. Except for the piano composition Johnny and Little Julia composed in 1904, all other four compositions in the said volume were written in the last decades of the 19th century, his most productive period in music composition.
